Saints 16 v 18 Harbury RUFC - Home Cup Draw on 7 Oct 2017

Published on Monday, 9 October 2017

The St Neots Saints hosted Harbury in the Junior Vase Cup completion on Saturday and came away disappointed in letting the visitors go home with a win, in a game that they knew was there for the taking.

Harbury started the game well and exerted early pressure on the Saints team, but a structured defensive line held solid as the Harbury forwards continually probed the Saints defences around the breakdown. The hard tackling of the forwards eventually paid off when Saints managed to turn the ball over deep in their own half and a strong run by centre Nic Robinson finally released the pressure and got Saints into Harbury territory. Scrum-half Jack Webb got quick ball out to his winger Dave Hopkins and another strong run from the winger resulted in Saints winning a penalty which Lewis Hall converted.

With their next visit to the Harbury end of the field, a well worked line-out set play saw Jack Haywards throw-in caught cleanly by Matt Cartwright who gave quick ball to Webb and fly-half Joe Woodgate ran a miss-move in midfield that saw outside centre Nic Robinson carve through the Harbury backs and into the Harbury 22. Quick ball again from the half-backs then found flanker Jordan Rook out wide on the left wing and the Harbury winger and full-back were unable to prevent Rook going over in the corner for a try.

With some more immense goal-line defending by the Saints forwards against their opposite numbers, finding no way through the Saints resolute defence, Harbury eventually opted to swing the ball wide and a long pass to their winger saw him race around a narrow Saints back-line to score a try in the corner.

More strong breaks by forwards Cartwright, Aiden Jordan and Johnny Berwick got Saints back into the Harbury half where Hall punished them with another penalty kick, but Harbury came back with a penalty kick of their own and then with the last play of the half, Harbury managed to put another try on the board after a quick tap penalty near the Saints goal-line.

Half Time – St Neots Saints 11 – 13 Harbury RUFC

An early Harbury score saw them extend their lead after the break, but with plenty of time on the clock Saints began to ramp up the pressure and eventually narrowed the gap when Johnny Berwick took a quick tap penalty near the Harbury goal-line and he managed to power over for a try.

But with the weather conditions worsening and an experienced Harbury pack playing a tight game whenever in possession, time did eventually run out for Saints in this very close encounter.
